There are many ways to remember the notes of the treble stave; however, I’ve always used this older method, the one taught to me when I was just starting. You can learn the notes of the treble stave by learning how to spell one word and learning a simple phrase.
Of course, there are many other phrases and methods for remembering the notes of the treble and bass staves. Still, this method seems relatively straightforward if you take the time to memorize the word and phrase.
The treble stave consists of five lines and four spaces. The bottom space is an F, followed by the second space from the bottom, an A. The third space from the bottom is C, and the fourth space is E. If we combine all of these letters, the spaces of the treble stave from the bottom up spell the word FACE.
The treble stave has five lines, with the lowest line being an E, followed by the second line from the bottom, a G, then the middle line B, the fourth line from the bottom a D, and the top line an F. The lines from the bottom of the treble stave to the top are E, G, B, D, and F, which can be remembered by the simple phrase: Elephants Got Big Dirty Feet. The first letter of each word is the note name: E for Elephant, G for Got, B for Big, D for Dirty, and F for feet.
The key to this system is to remember that we spell the word and say the phrase, starting from the bottom of the treble stave and working our way to the top of the stave.
If you want to improve your note-reading skills even further, once you memorize the word and phrase for the treble stave, practice naming the notes using actual flashcards or using a downloadable app. This will help you learn the note names quickly and with some added fun.
