Why home studios evolve. Home recording studios come in all shapes and sizes, from a spare table in a living room where you can set up a laptop computer with a MIDI controller keyboard and a small pair of audio monitors to a multi-room studio in your basement with expensive gear, a control room, vocal booth, and anything between. No matter what size or type of home studio you have, you’ll probably see it evolve before your eyes the longer you own it.

As someone who embarked on the journey of designing a modest one-room synthesizer studio, I can attest to the fact that the process is never truly over. Like many others, I find myself constantly updating, modifying, or redoing my home studio. But why is that? While there are numerous reasons to redesign or make minor alterations to your studio, a few key factors stand out: workflow, technology, new gear, and a change of scenery.

One of the most crucial aspects of a home studio is its workflow. This can evolve as you experiment with different instruments and equipment. It’s a process of discovery that unfolds as you spend more time in your studio, rearranging equipment and instruments to suit your needs better.

Rapid technological advancements play a significant role in the evolution of home studios. As you swap out computers and screens, change cabling, and update gear, your studio adapts to keep up with the latest tools and technologies.

Who doesn’t love new gear? Trying out a new toy in your studio is always exciting, but that usually means changing things up as you either swap it out with another piece of gear or create a place for it in your studio.

Sometimes, artistically, you simply feel like you need a change of scenery, whether you need to move your entire studio to a new room or change the location of a workstation so you’re looking at a different wall. Sometimes, something as simple as changing where things are in your studio can bring out new inspiration.

This article serves as a fun little warning for any of my students considering designing a creative workspace or studio. It’s a lot of fun, but it may never feel finished. It seems that most people’s experience is that their studio keeps evolving, and for many, including myself, that makes it great fun.

Happy music-making.
