What is Outschool?
Ever wonder what Outschool is all about? It’s a fantastic platform where independent teachers like me offer lessons to students across 183 countries. Currently, Outschool boasts 140,000 live online courses, covering all sorts of subjects at the time of writing this post.
Why parents like it
Parents love the platform because it’s a convenient way to enroll their children in various activities that are both fun and educational. What sets Outschool apart is its emphasis on safety. If you want to teach there, you must pass a criminal background check, submit a teaching video, and provide a course description and outline. It’s a bit of a process, but I actually enjoyed putting it all together. You can check out my teacher profile here.
Getting started is easy.
For students, taking lessons is simple. Log into your Outschool account, sign up for a class, and find your materials on the classroom page. Everything happens on Zoom, and each session is recorded for future reference. Teachers can also add extra materials for students to work on. It’s a pretty solid system. This is similar to how I teach through my private teaching practice.
What I teach on Outschool
While most of my students find me through my studio website, Bach To Basics Music, a few have stumbled upon me on Outschool, where I’m currently offering two courses: “Piano for Beginners – Understanding the Piano: 1-On-1 Ongoing Piano Lessons” and “Private Piano Lessons – Discovering the Enjoyment of Music.” Just a heads up, all the rates are in U.S. funds to keep things simple. I ensured the lesson rates matched those at my online teaching studio, so there was no difference in tuition; it was only fair.
A new way of naming piano lessons
Creating course names is an area I’m still getting used to. With over 25 years as a full-time private piano and theory teacher, how I found students was through my Royal Conservatory of Music certification and the endorsements from satisfied students. In the past, I didn’t have to come up with elaborate names to be found on online course searches; simply saying piano lessons seemed reasonable enough. However, it’s a fun and creative new challenge that I’m still working on.
Final thoughts
Despite being relatively new to the platform, my experience on Outschool has been positive. Sure, there are some limitations compared to teaching through my studio website, but overall, it’s been enjoyable. So, if you’re on Outschool and looking for piano lessons, check out my profile. If you prefer checking out live online piano or theory lessons through the traditional route, drop me a line through my studio website – I’m here to answer any questions.
